CHILDREN’S BICYCLE PROGRAM GETS A NEW SHOP!
BIKE SHOP SUPPORTS YOUTH EDUCATION.

The youth development program at Boise Parks and Recreation is a partnership with SWIMBA and has grown so much a new shop was needed. Kids can now get started in the vocational education program that teaches bicycle mechanic job skills. The program with this new bicycle shop facility can now offer vocational education and job training.

The bicycle school program is designed to educate youth about mountain biking while promoting positive character traits such as self-reliance, perseverance, and respect for the self, others, and the natural environment.

This program was started in 2002 when SWIMBA contributed $3,000 in proceeds from the 2002 Fat Tire Festival to the bicycle school education program for kids. A matching $3,000 Grant from REI sporting goods store outfitted the program with 12 bicycles, tools and a trailer. The program is being run in cooperation with Boise City Parks and Recreation to provide education, trail ethics and environmental awareness. The program has grown over 200% and will better serve the community with this new bicycle shop/school.
